چکیده

This is the second paper of a series in which we analyze mathematical properties and develop numerical methods for a degenerate elliptic-parabolic partial diierential system which describes the ow of two incom-pressible, immiscible uids in porous media. In this paper we consider a nite element approximation for this system. The elliptic equation for the pressure and velocity is approximated by a mixed nite element method, while the degenerate parabolic equation for the saturation is approximated by a Galerkin nite element method. Both semidiscrete (continuous in time) and fully discrete approximations are analyzed. Optimal error estimates in energy norms are obtained for this approximation. The error analysis does not use any regularization of the saturation equation; the error estimates are derived directly from the fully degenerate equation. Also, the analysis does not impose any restriction on the nature of degeneracy. Finally, it respects the minimal regularity on the solution of the diierential system.

The problem of estimating a generic phase-shift experienced by a quantum state is addressed for a generally degenerate phase shift operator. The optimal positive operator-valued measure is derived along with the optimal input state. Two relevant examples are analyzed: i) a multi-mode phase shift operator for multipath interferometry; ii) the two mode heterodyne phase detection.

A Sub-Optimal Look-Up Table Based on Fuzzy System to Enhance the Reliability of Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Coriolis mass flow meters are one of the most accurate tools to measure the mass flow in the industry. However, two-phase mode (gas-liquid) may cause severe operating difficulties as well as decreasing certitude in measurement. This paper presents a method based on fuzzy systems to correct the error and improve the reliability of these sensors in the presence of two-phase model fluid. Definite ...

Adaptive enrichment in biomarker-stratified clinical trial design

In Phase II oncology trials, targeted therapies are being constantly evaluated for their efficacy in specific populations of interest. Such trials require designs that allow for stratification based on the participants’ biomarker signature. One of the disadvantages of a targeted design (defined as enrichment in biomarker-positive sub-population) is that if the drug has at least some activity in...

Determining Optimal Number of Samples for Constructing Multivariate Control Chart

Usually, there are two phases in constructing a multivariate control chart. Phase I is to estimate the in-control process parameters and to establish control limits using historical data. Phase II is when the control limits are used to monitor the process. This paper focuses on determining the optimal number of samples in Phase I since number of samples affect the cost of quality control in pra...

A Modified Degenerate Kernel Method for the System of Fredholm Integral Equations of the Second Kind

In this paper, the system of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind is investigated by using a modified degenerate kernel  method (MDKM). To construct a MDKM the source function is approximated by the same way of producing degenerate kernel. The interpolation is used to make the needed approximations. Lagrange polynomials are adopted for the interpolation. The equivalency of  proposed m...
